Report on the Annual ESDR Meeting
(Yoshiki Tokura, President of JSID) |
The 39th Annual ESDR Meeting, chaired by Professor Sarolta Karpati , was held in Budapest from September 9th to 12th. Attendees included an
unusually large contingent of about 100 Japanese researchers. Participants from Japan presented more than 60 of the eventfs roughly 600 presentations.
The extraordinarily large number of entries is partly a consequence of the decision by many Japanese universities to cancel their dispatch of researchers to the Annual SID Meeting in May because of the swine flu outbreak. Two other important factors contributed to Japanfs large presence: JSID members have begun to place greater importance on the ESDR, in addition to the SID, as an academic meeting where they can showcase their research; and friendly relations between the JSID and the ESDR have been promoted.
That the venue was the attractive city of Budapest might be another reason for the large representation by Japanese researchers. In Hungary, the Magyars are said to be descended from Central Asian tribes that were also partly the ancestors of the Japanese. There are some similarities between Magyars and Japanese. For example, when it comes to music, a Hungarian rhapsody gets to the hearts the Japanese. The order of peoplefs names, with family name first and given name second, is the same in both countries. It was very impressive to listen to the Hungarian piano rhapsody by Liszt at the opening ceremony.

The number of topics presented by JSID members at the Plenary Sessions attests to the significance that these members place on the ESDR.
Six of the 24 topics at the Plenary Sessions were by JSID members. Ten topics by our members were selected for the Concurrent Oral Sessions. Presentations by Japanese researchers were particularly numerous on the second day of the Plenary Session. Dr. Kubo from Keio University, who was the final presenter, gained much admiration, with the audience giving an extended round of applause at the end of his presentation.
Excellent presentations like Dr. Kubofs make me realize that the JSID has made great strides toward becoming a venue for front-line researchers of the world. I confess to being deeply moved at the time. I believe that the success of the IID2008 contributed to the great advancement of the JSID. At the meeting, a summary of the presentation topics was introduced by ESDR executive members, in which many of the topics covered by JSID members were introduced. The 1st ESDR/JSID Young Fellowship Collegiality Award was initiated at the meeting in Budapest. This award is given by the ESDR and JSID to about three young researchers from the visiting association at the annual meeting of the host association. The awardees, before or after the annual meeting, visit research institutes in the host associationfs home country or region, have research discussions and deepen friendly relations. A grant of 300,000 yen is given to each awardee. This time, three Japanese doctors -- Dr. Ken Natsuga of Hokkaido Univ., Dr. Satoshi Hirakawa of Ehime Univ. and Dr. Tetsuya Honda of Kyoto Univ. -- were selected as awardees. They visited research institutes in Freiburg, Zurich, and Heidelberg, respectively. The awards ceremony at the meeting venue must surely be an unforgettable experience for each of them. At the JSID annual meeting, which will be held in Fukuoka in December, three young ESDR members will be selected as awardees of the grant and an awards ceremony will be held. In addition to attending the academic events, Secretary-General Hiroshi Shimizu and I attended a business meeting twice and deepened mutual understanding between the representatives from the ESDR and the SID. The ESDR expressed its gratitude to the JSID for sending so many researchers to the meeting. All of us agreed on having further opportunities to exchange opinions on the ESDR/JSID Young Fellow Collegiality Award initiated this time and on preparations for the IID2013 in Edinburgh. It was decided that, when Professor Eugene Healy from the ESDR and Professor Richard Clark from the SID visit Japan for the annual JSID meeting in December, the secretaries of the three associations will get together. The number of ESDR members who attend the annual meeting of the JSID is expected to increase. After the meeting drew to a close, I left Budapest to see my outpatients at the university hospital on Monday. Walking to my university on Monday morning, I felt refreshed and revitalized. I couldnft help but think of the JSIDfs contributions at the ESDR annual meeting. |

ESDR/JSID Young Fellow Collegiality Awards 2009
|
After rigorous, impartial determination, the screening committee selected the winners of the 2009 awards. The awardees will participate in the ESDR Meeting in Budapest (from September 9), and will visit research institutions in Europe that the participants will have selected before the visit. We hope that the awardees will spend meaningful time deepening exchanges with researchers at European institutions.

The 34th Annual Meeting of JSID |
|
December 4-5, 2009 in Fukuoka
|
|
The 34th annual meeting of JSID will be held at JAL Resort Sea Hawk Hotel Fukuoka from 4-5 December 2009 in Fukuoka. The 1st JSID Asia-Oceania-Forum will be held on Sunday, December 6, in conjunction with the annul meeting.
From the 34th annnual meeting in 2009, JSID officially annouces that English is only the official lanugage throughout the meeting.
With this drastic change, we successfully have obtained more abstracts from outside Japan than ever before. Total number of the abstract goes to approximately 300.
We look forward to seeing many participants from all over the world.
